The letterman jacket had been a lost artifact for many years in Potosi with there being no way to order one through the school. However, since 2020, it has made a big comeback and has become quite popular among the students.
I talked to multiple students who own letterman jackets, and most of what they had to say was positive. Senior Ryan Stoney, who got his letterman jacket as a sophomore, said, “I got my letterman jacket because my older brother Jake had one, and they look cool.” Sophomore letter jacket owners Aaron Edge and River Sahr also said the main reason they got theirs is that they think they are cool.
“One of the only downsides is that they take a long time to get made and delivered,” said senior Kyler Hefty, who had ordered his jacket late in his sophomore year, and it arrived in the fall of his junior year. Kyler said that the jacket was well worth the wait because of its amazing style and comfort.
Although the letterman jacket looks great, that is not the only reason to get one. “I wanted one not only because of how it will look while I'm in high school, but also because it will be something to show for when I am done,” said River. Letterman jackets are not only jackets; they are memories. Aaron said that he got one because he always saw the seniors in the halls wearing their jackets and said to himself, “I want to be a senior that the underclassmen look up to.”
Not only were these jackets made for the students, but they were made by the students. In the spring of 2020, some students in the junior and senior classes wanted letterman jackets, so they asked Mr. Fry, who has connections with Jostens, if they could order jackets. Fry got the students in touch with the rep from Jostens, the company that produces the jackets, and they got to design the jackets exactly how they wanted them. Now, students can order their jackets online using the design made by those first students. Mr. Fry has a QR code to the ordering link on his classroom door.
After talking to all of these students who own letterman jackets, I think that it would be a great idea for any student to give some thought to getting a jacket. They are a great way to show our Potosi Pride.
