Serres coaching track

For many athletes, running is seen as a punishment, something that they are forced to do rather than want to do, but for track athletes it is the focus of the sport. Why on earth would someone choose to put themself through that, and how did the Cassville-Potosi track team see more people on the team last year than ever before? Part of the explanation can be traced back to the positive and enthusiastic attitude of Coach Rob Serres.

Mr. Serres started his involvement at Potosi by subbing as a gym teacher last year. “I knew some people from Potosi, including Mr Siegert. I knew I liked the environment and the kids, so I decided to sub here.” From there he decided to also help coach track in the spring.

Mr. Serres retired in 2023 after being a gym teacher and track coach at Platteville High School for 40 years. “I knew I wanted to teach physical education and coach from a young age. I had some great coaches to inspire me.” Serres had a successful high school athletic career, going to state all four years in cross country. He continued his running at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he eventually qualified for the national meet.

After graduating, he continued to pursue his passion by coaching and teaching at Platteville. His attitude and lightheartedness allowed students to have fun and grow as athletes. “I love seeing kids go from A to Z. Seeing them grow and become better is why any coach does what they do.” Now, he brings that same attitude to the CP track and imparts his knowledge and experience to the program.

Serres has a “never give up” mindset that he shares with all of his students. His positive attitude inspires many Potosi students to try out for track even if they are unsure. Serres says, “Track is a sport that can benefit everyone, that’s why I think everyone should consider going out.” His outlook on life has made him into a role model and given students the positive reinforcement that every athlete needs to succeed.
