THE BALLOT QUESTION
The Need
Safety & Community
Educational Spaces
Aging Infrastructure
THE NEED: Safety & Community
The community and school lack a storm shelter, which could be largely funded by a FEMA grant and provide needed gym space for school and community use.
Bus and parent pick up/drop off are currently happening in the same parking lot creating congestion, safety concerns, and traffic flow issues.
The school does not have enough parking for events/activities.
The current fitness space is too small to accommodate school and community use.
The entry to the high school gym is congested for events and lacks the ability to control visitor access to the rest of the building.
THE NEED: Educational Spaces
The building lacks enough classroom space to support students and programming.
The elementary gym does not have adequate space for elementary physical education.
The elementary gym is also too small for a regulation basketball court, which prevents holding high school practices and middle school games.
Proximity of science labs limits collaboration opportunities and the ability to share resources.
THE NEED: Aging Infrastructure
The current parking lot is deteriorating and in need of repair.
The aging high school gym lacks Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant bleachers, which do not have aisles and handrails resulting in safety issues, and the gym floor needs to be replaced.
Locker rooms are aged, worn, and lack equity for athletes.
Outdoor athletic field lighting for baseball, softball, and football is failing and in need of replacement.
The Solution: Building
Build a one-court gym for elementary physical education, practices, and middle school games that meets FEMA storm shelter requirements (the current gym would remain the high school competition gym)
Build locker rooms to provide equity for athletes
Renovate the current elementary gym into the library
Renovate the existing library into additional classrooms
Update the current high school gym with ADA-compliant bleachers and a new wood floor
Build a fitness center for school and community use
Relocate the biology science lab to be adjacent to the chemistry lab, which allows the current biology lab to become part of the gym lobby
Relocate the foods lab adjacent to agriculture
The Solution: Site
Create a new bus drop off / pick up to separate bus traffic from parent traffic for safety
Create an additional parking lot to support the community storm shelter and provide more parking for school events and activities
Repair the existing parking lot and reconfigure to improve traffic flow and safety
Replace outdoor athletic field lighting for baseball, softball, and football
The Investment
If the community supports the capital referendum, the plan would allow us to accept the FEMA grant, which would offset a portion of the total project cost.
If the $9.1 million referendum is approved, this would increase the tax mill rate by $1.85, representing $185.00 annually for every $100,000 of equalized property value.
